Weird Issues & Devices

We aren't afraid to look at anything.

Got something broken that does not fit any of our other pages? An old gadget, a one-off project, an electronic something-or-other most shops will not touch? Bring it in. If it has power going through it, we will take a look.

Examples of "Weird"

Some of the odd stuff we take on

Old game systems & retro gear

Original consoles, handhelds, arcade boards. Whether it needs a recap, a controller port re-soldered, or diagnostic work — bring it in.

Odd small electronics

Battery chargers, wireless doohickeys, weird USB gadgets, kitchen electronics. If it broke and no one else will look at it, we will.

Solder joints that gave up

Plugs that came loose from a board, wires that snapped inside a device, connectors that broke off — often a straightforward soldering fix. See Soldering & Micro-Soldering.

"I have no idea what happened"

Sometimes a device just quits. We start with a diagnostic and figure out what it is doing (or not doing) before we quote anything.

Projects other shops turned down

If another shop said they will not touch it, ask us. Some of it we still will not do — but we tell you up front instead of shrugging.

Custom mods & modifications

Non-standard requests, custom add-ons, one-off changes. Tell us what you are trying to do and we will let you know if we can help.

How pricing works for weird stuff

For phones we always do free diagnostics. For everything else — old gadgets, unusual devices, one-off issues — the diagnostic price depends on how much labor it takes to figure out. Bring it in and we will quote the diagnostic itself before we start, so you always know what you are getting into.

And if we look at it and it is not worth repairing, we tell you. We would rather send you home with an honest "no" than a big bill for a marginal fix.

FAQ

Common questions

What counts as a "weird" repair?

Anything that does not fit our standard categories. Old or unusual devices, oddball electronics, projects other shops turned down, small gadgets with soldering that came loose, one-off issues that need real diagnostic time. If it plugs in or has a battery, we will look at it.

What does it cost to have you look at something unusual?

For phones we still do free diagnostics. For everything else, the diagnostic price is case-by-case depending on how much labor it takes to figure out. We give you a real number before we start — no surprise fees. Come in for a free quote on the diagnostic itself.

Will you tell me if it is not worth repairing?

Absolutely. If the repair cost is going to approach the replacement cost, we will tell you honestly. Sometimes the honest answer is "it is not worth it" and we would rather send you home with that answer than a big bill for a marginal fix.

What about really old stuff?

Bring it. Vintage audio, old game systems, obscure hardware — the challenge is usually getting parts. If we can source them, we can usually do the work. If we can not, we tell you.
